The present joint-stock company PETROF belongs with its 178 000 square meters, and about 700 employees among the biggest European piano manufacturers.
The company has been growing and selling successfully on the world market. It is not only as a consequence of the currently growing fondness for rich, melodious and tender sound which are so typical of PETROF pianos but also of the carefully chosen manufacturing and export policy, capitalized by the qualified workmanship of Czech piano manufacturers. To be able to continuously improve the pianos as well as the services related to their use, PETROF has enough background and experience to be able to continue to improve the pianos as well as services related to their use. Besides the production department there are also an acoustic research department, design and development departments, a company shop, professional service and transport facilities. The efforts of the PETROF company are today, as in the past, aimed at the manufacture of quality grand and upright pianos for domestic but mainly foreign markets. New technology and the results of our own applied research and development are used including protection of industrial rights arising from the above activities.
Pianos provide reliance for beginners, experienced pianists and an inspiration for piano virtuosos.
PETROF is the company with its eyes on the future and so invest a lot of money in research and development.
The manufacturing process in PETROF plants has undergone a rapid evolution during the last few decades. This evolution has enabled, while keeping the traditional handicraft, the increase in industrial production.
However, the typical character of musical instrument manufacture, where the assembly and important operations are still done individually were never ignored or overlooked. During the manufacture of instruments the highly professional classic manufacturing methods with their irreplaceable portion of handwork of highly-qualified specialists blend together with precise industrial production using up-to-date machinery.
Compared to many other manufacturers of keyboard musical instruments the PETROF company manufacture a substantial portion of sub-assemblies and parts themselves. Sound boards, pin blocks, keyboards, hammers, strings, metal parts and many other components are made in the company workshops. Upon a customer's request, other parts made by specialists from all over the world can be used. In some cases there is not only the purchase of parts or material from well-known specialists, but also direct co-operation between them and PETROF. To give an example, there is a very successful close co-operation between the famous company RENNER where, along with original hammers and actions of this well-known manufacturer hammers marked Renner-Petrof are used. The basic material for the construction of grand and upright pianos is wood. The heart of the instrument - the soundboard - is made from wood, as well as other parts. Wood also significantly contributes to the beauty of the instrument, so extraordinary care is paid to its selection. The soundboard, with its large vibrating area and high level of tension is made exclusively from carefully selected dense-ringed, radial cut resonant spruce. Wood from high-quality European beech is also used for the construction of skeletons. The skeletons are distinguished by their purposeful design and by their overall rigid and stable construction.
Cast iron frames are of modern design that is to bear the tension of the strings. Connected to this ensures the stability of the strings tension for the long lifetime of the instruments. Holes in the frames are drilled on CNC automatic jig boring machines.
Quality of production, the modern equipment and professional skills of PETROF staff are used by foreign manufacturers of grand and upright pianos. The company manufactures for them according to their instructions complete covered acoustic elements and even complete instruments bearing their trademarks. Orders for such production are increasing.
The keyboard department is one of the most important departments of PETROF. Keyboards are manufactured on high-output, precision, automatic CNC machines.
Careful attention is paid during the manufacture of grand and upright pianos to surface finish. This is self-apparent as an instrument with a beautiful sound has to look beautiful as well. Because of this the finishing requirements are high. Polyurethane varnishes are used to obtain satin surface finish, when a hi-gloss finish is required, polyester varnishes are applied.
The manufacture of grand and upright pianos ends in a similar way to other production by final inspection and preparation for dispatch. The dispatch department has to pack the instruments in such a way as to prevent both physical damage and damage due to humidity that could occur in their often-long journeys to their final destination.
