This castle built in 1109 is hidden in the middle of the mixed woodland protected by UNESCO. It was the residence of the spouse of the Emperor Charles IV that, to please her, let many nightingales collect in the local forest to sing for her. There was imprisoned the English alchemist Edward Kelley, that promised to prepare the “Elixir of Life” for the Emperor Rudolph II. A historical exposition along with late Gothic paintings and sculptures is on display inside.

In the midst of deep forests is the impressive panorama of royal Krivoklat Castle . It was founded in 1109 and owned by the royal family . The king Vaclav IV, was passionately fond of the castle and hunting in the surrounding forests was especially to his liking. Its present appearance dates largely from its reconstruction in the late 15th century . The castle lost its importance after many fires . A historical exposition ( a silver treasury and a knights´ hall ), late Gothic paintings and sculptures in the royal hall and other remarkable interiors are possible to see there.
See a beautiful castle chapel, the Great Royal and Chivalric Halls with an exhibition of Gothic paintings and sculptures, the castle library containing over 52.000 bands, a rich museum and a painting gallery of the Fürstenberg, a famous castle prison with torture chambers and torture instruments, a monumental tower with a collection of hunting trophies and a view of the surrounding area, a pleasant walk around the castle walls, the tower Huderka with an open-hearth kitchen and an observatory gallery, the seat of the captain with temporary exhibitions…all of this and much more belongs to Křivoklát, a national cultural monument.

I. Tour - The Castle Interiors
Through the Czech history or the variety of architectonic styles at Krivoklat.

The basic tour for visitors includes the upper courtyard and most of the caste interiors. You will see a room for ages called Stribrnice, of course also the heart of the castle - the castle chapel, the Chevalric and the Great Royal Hall, the library and the gallery of the Furstenberg family and the castle museum. At the end of the tour you will visit the castle cellars that used to serve as a prison and the basement of the Great Tower - the dungeon.

You will not only get acquainted with the history of the castle and the countries of the Czech Crown, you will even see how the various architectonic styles developed during the time - from the Romance to Early and Late Gothic.

II. Tour - Hunting Trophies, the Great Tower and the galleries
The Fortification System of Krivoklat (the Great Tower)
A tour for "experienced" visitors - find out about the well-preserved highly developed fortification system of the castle: the southern wall of the upper castle, the eastern wall-edge, the striped Bastion and the "Donjon" of Křivoklát - the defensive - dwelling tower (1st, 2nd and 3rd floor).

This tour is physically demanding, the visitors have to climb more than 300 steps.
The II. Tour is only open from April to October.
